During his 55 years career from 1966 to 2021, he recorded nearly 500 songs in more than 40 studio albums, with the song Goin’ Home (2002) as the climax of the latter part of his career. Neil Young’s most noticeable early appearances on TV came with the tracks ‘Mr Soul’ in 1967 and ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ in 1970, a song that was later covered by many artists included by Eurythmics’ singer Annie Lennox in 1995.

Many songs of the Canadian poet and singer Leonard Cohen (1934 Quebec – 2016 Los Angeles) carry scents of perfection, like those composed during his 1960s stay in the beautiful little Saronic island of Hydra, Greece (cf. link), those of his comeback to mass success in 1984-92 or those of the 2001-2016 period, when Cohen was 67 to 82 years old. His discography of 15 studio albums includes the post-mortem LP ‘Thanks for the dance‘ (2019).
While Frank Zappa’s Mothers Of Invention set the tone of the experimental underground rock subculture with their albums ‘Freak out‘ (1966) and ‘Absolutely free‘ (1967), The Velvet Underground shortly leads the scene with Lou Reed as leader and main songwriter. The band releases 36 songs in 4 studio albums between 1967 and 1970, does not achieve commercial success but becomes cult with an avant-garde style heralding the punk rock genre, a.o. with its famous songs ‘I’m Waiting for the Man‘ and ‘Run run run‘ (1967) or ‘White light white heat‘ and ‘Sister Ray‘ (1968). Lou Reed subsequentely produces 250 songs in 20 solo LPs in 1971-2007, the best known of which is ‘Transformer’ (1972) with its track ‘Walk on the wild side‘.

With 200 songs published in 15 studio LPs between 1967 and 2014, Pink Floyd is psychedelic pop’s most influential and successful act . David Gilmour joins in December 1967 while the band’s disabled mentor Syd Barret struggles and leaves in March 1968. Pink Floyd’s song ‘Echoes‘ (1971, nb: 23’30” long) and LP album ‘Dark side of the moon‘ (1973) rank among the greatest evergreen artworks of pop-music. On the sidelines, the band’s history is paved with educative business lessons, e.g. the episode of the 60£ paid to Clare Torry for her two-hour improvisation on ‘The great gig in the sky‘ (1973), Wright’s eviction in 1979, Water’s just missed 1986 takeover attempt and the renewed commercial success in 1987 and 1994… Mind-boggling epics indeed!
Founded in Los Angeles in 1965, ‘The Doors‘ publishes 6 studio albums with 62 songs in 4 years. In July 1971, its cult singer Jim Morrison is found dead in his bathtub in a rented flat in Le Marais, Paris where he spent 3 months after the release of the Doors’ last LP ‘L.A. Woman‘.

An inspired musician and young media star, he releases 70 songs from 1966 to 1974 and reaches 20 times the Top15 of the singles Chart. In 1975, he immigrates to the United States from where he releases six additional LP albums and from where the saga of his fortunes and misfortunes reach the French tabloids during 40 years.
