GENESIS / PHIL COLLINS / PETER GABRIEL: .. UK.. 1970s prog rock / 1980s new wave
..
Genesis is formed in 1967 in a Surrey boarding school by 5 pupils including Gabriel, Banks and Rutherford. Phil Collins joins the band in mid-1970 as drummer and backing vocalist while Steve Hackett joins in early 1971 as lead guitarist. The three LPs Nursery Cryme (1971), Foxtrot (1972, with the epic 23′ ‘Supper’s Ready‘) and Selling England by the pound (1973) propel Genesis to the pinnacle of the European psychedelic rock scene.
Peter Gabriel leaves the band in 1975 and Phil Collins takes over as lead vocalist. In the early 80s, Genesis refocuses on more conventional pop-rock where it achieves massive commercial success. In parallel, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins both deliver breathtaking music in their solo careers.
